Beyond the Visual
The Worcester Art Museum has developed an official app aimed at enhancing accessibility for visitors with visual impairments. This innovative tool provides audio descriptions of select pieces from the Museum's collection, offering insights into the artworks' colors, details, and significant background information at the user's own pace.
The primary objective of this app is to broaden accessibility, ensuring that a diverse audience can engage meaningfully with the art on display. Users can download the app and either explore its features from home or activate it in designated areas within the Museum. This interactive experience guides users to specific artworks in a gallery, allowing for an enriched understanding of each piece.
This application is the result of a collaborative effort between the Worcester Art Museum, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and Audio Journal. Currently in development, the Museum is committed to refining the app through ongoing updates and enhancements.
